A series of official functions to mark these days are organised by Congressmen with an eye on getting a pat from the Congress boss, Sonia Gandhi. A number of new schemes named after the former prime ministers belonging to the Nehru-Gandhi family are launched on those days.

And in the national capital where even minion Congressmen have busy roads named after them, there is not even a slip road in memory of Rao. Virendra Kapoor 4 July 2010 You can be forgiven if you did not notice that Monday, June 28th, was former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao’s 90th birthday. For, barring a small advertisement inserted by the Congress-led Andhra Pradesh government in a Madras-headquartered English language ‘national daily’, there was nothing to remind you of the one Congress Party prime minister who single-handedly changed the direction of the Indian economy, setting it on course to become an economic powerhouse. Not unlike any banana republic, the ruling Gandhi family equates itself with the nation. The birth and death anniversaries of three former prime ministers belonging to the family are celebrated on a grand scale. Every ministry and department of the Congress-ruled federal and state governments spends crores of rupees annually to eulogise in the most glowing terms Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi
and Rajiv Gandhi. A series of official functions to mark these days are organised by Congressmen with an eye on getting a pat from the Congress boss, Sonia Gandhi. A number of new schemes named after the former prime ministers belonging to the Nehru-Gandhi family are launched on those days. Yet, Rao, who became prime minister when India had had to pledge its gold with the Bank of England, when Kashmir was in the throes of a huge insurrectionist/terrorist turmoil, and when the bogus Nehruvian non-alignment policy was in tatters after the Soviet Union had crumbled just like the house of cards it really was, steadied the ship of Indian State. And in the national capital where even minion Congressmen have busy roads named after them, there is not even a slip road in memory of Rao. Indeed, nobody would have heard of a man called Manmohan Singh, a low-key economic bureaucrat all his working life, were it not for Rao’s brainwave to hand over the Finance Ministry to a professional economist. Admittedly, Rao’s first choice was the late I. G. Patel. When the former RBI Governor and Director of the prestigious London School of Economics declined, Rao pulled out Singh from retirement in Chandigarh and handed over the Finance Ministry to him. A few years later, Sonia Gandhi might have picked the same Singh for prime ministership because she found him unthreatening and unlikely to grow into a leader in his own right, but the real credit for ‘discovering’ him does go to Rao. Yet, she refuses to even acknowledge that Rao was once a prime minister of the party of which she is now the unquestioned boss. In fact, Sonia Gandhi has a bigger reason to be grateful to Rao. For, on her recommendation alone, Rao had appointed Hansraj Bhardwaj as the Union Law Minister. Bhardwaj, in turn, had duly fulfilled his brief by ensuring that the criminal investigations into the Bofors bribery scam, which were being overseen by a senior law officer of the government, were buried a million fathoms deep. Privately, the reason given by senior Congress leaders for disowning Rao is that he was amiss in not ensuring adequate protection for the Babri Masjid. Former UPA Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, and an unabashed Nehru admirer who was recently nominated in ‘intellectual’ category to the Rajya Sabha, cited the Babri Masjid demolition as the biggest blot against the former prime minister. Quite conveniently, Aiyar forgot that the Masjid-Mandir dispute started under the aegis of the first prime minister back in 1949 when Nehru chose to ignore the fact that someone had surreptitiously kept the idols of Lord Rama inside a hurriedly built temple in the Babri Masjid complex. Instead of nipping the potentially divisive dispute in the bud, Nehru allowed the matter to fester in some lower court in UP. Again, decades later when L K Advani’s Rath Yatra brought the issue up front, it was Aiyar’s then boss and Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who launched the 1996 election campaign from the disputed site in Ayodhya by promising to establish—Ram Rajya. Earlier, the same Gandhi government had opened the gates of the disputed site and allowed the Kar Sevaks to perform Shilanayas from there. So, why blame Rao alone for looking the other way when both Nehru and Rajiv Gandhi had pandered to the Mandir protagonists? But regardless of his shortcomings, and, admittedly, he had several, Rao had ensured his place in modern history by turning the direction of the Indian economy. If today we are growing at near nine per cent annually the credit must go to him for unleashing the hitherto untapped entrepreneurial energies of the nation, which had suffered for long. Yet, the Sonia Gandhi-controlled party refuses to acknowledge that Rao had ever ruled this country. That would explain why the Congress-led government, which as a matter of routine names all schemes, projects, roads, buildings etc., after members of the Nehru-Gandhi family, is yet to name anything to commemorate Andhra Pradesh’s most
well-known son. The fact that the government headed by Manmohan Singh, who is where he is because of Rao, too has not bothered to commemorate the former prime minister tells a thing or two about Singh as well. On the evening of 28th, in spite of the announcement by the Andhra government in the small ad mentioned above, no leader of the Congress Party or a member of the Manmohan Singh government showed up at the small function at the Andhra Bhawan on Ashoka Road in New Delhi to pay tributes to the ‘great son of Andhra Pradesh.’ Yes, the controversial man, Chandraswami, was very much present. But cronies and brokers who had made tonnes of money by playing factotums of Chandraswami when Rao was in power gave the
function a miss. This is Delhi, you see. A very heartless Delhi, indeed. Here you are important so long as you can dispense favours. Once out of power, you are a nobody. Like Rao has become for the very Congressmen who used to deify him so long as he was the prime minister.
