RAAVAN grosses 20 crores worldwide on opening day Bollywood Trade News Network Reliance BIG Pictures and Madras Talkies' RAAVAN seems to have got an excellent opening at the box office. It has grossed Rs 20 crores worldwide on the opening day from its three versions- Hindi (RAAVAN), Tamil (RAAVANAN) and Telugu (VILLAIN). RAAVAN is India's first film to have released worldwide in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu language simultaneously. The film has opened in 2200 screens worldwide on 18th June in all its three versions. Directed by Mani Ratnam, the film is a modern-day version and a loose adaptation of the Indian epic Ramayana, in which Sita, the wife of Lord Rama, was abducted by the demon (Rakshasa) king of Lanka, Ravana. The film's score and soundtrack is composed by A. R. Rahman. http://in.movies.yahoo.com/news-detail/91545/RAAVAN-grosses- 20-crores-worldwide-opening-day.html One of my fav songs-Shreya darling maatalu- Naa premadeshaanni prathi rojoo paalincheyy, naa raaanee vaasaanni re pagaloo rakshinche nee gundelake vesthaa naa votu... |

New_user:Maniratnam, K moosukuni, just Tamil / Telugu audience kosam cinemalu theesthe, better
Vikram Clicks as Raavanan Even as Mani Ratnam’s bilingual continues to get a mixed response among Hindi audiences, Vikram comes up trumps in the Tamil version. His role as Veera in Raavanan can be compared to some of his best-essayed characters in films like Sethu & Pithamagan. Vikram plays Veera, a Robin Hood of sorts to tribes in the jungles. He is feared by the cops, loved by the tribes and well protected by his family & friends. The 44-yr-old actor has worked his way up to be noticed by Mani Ratnam and his preparation to etch out the character of Veera is there for all to see. As I watched the entry of Vikram in Raavanan, the Tamil audiences yelled, screamed and whistled deliriously in the hall, as if to say “We knew this was worth our monies”. Here we were, at the very first frame of a film when the protagonist utters not a single word yet, and the audience is going berserk. Such is the effect he has down south. All is known about how Mani Ratnam, along with Santosh Sivan and Manikandan, can weave magic into every frame with top-of-the-line cinematography. However, Vikram brings alive the method in the madness of Veera. Raavan in Ramayana is an entirely different person if one were to understand his story in isolation. There was indeed a method to that madness if one were to spare a moment. I loved every bit of this Raavanan, thanks to all the parallels drawn from Raavan’s life. Malayalam actor Prithviraj plays Inspector Dev Prakash. Prithviraj’s character too is fleshed out brilliantly. You know he is the good guy, but the madness (at times evil) prevails here too. There are some interesting scenes in the film that make you wonder who really is the good guy after all. Prabhu (son of Late Sivaji Ganesh) makes a good impression as Vikram’s brother, while Karthik too gets a decent comeback of sorts. Priya Mani’s role as Veera’s sister makes a huge impact and sets the pace for the entire chase that unfolds between Veera and Dev. Aishwarya is too delicate for a highly demanding role as this. She is definitely better suited to the Pink Panther and Dhoom2 genre of movies. A R Rehman weaves his special magic that he always reserves for Mani Ratnam. Raavanan – Thumbs up from me! One of my fav songs-Shreya darling maatalu- Naa premadeshaanni prathi rojoo paalincheyy, naa raaanee vaasaanni re pagaloo rakshinche nee gundelake vesthaa naa votu... |

Fared way below the mark in its opening weekend. The film opened to below average houses on Friday, registered a fall on Saturday due to disappointing reports and also due to the India-Pakistan cricket match, while Sunday was slightly better than Friday. The opening weekend business of the Hindi version stands at approx. Rs. 16.5 cr. to Rs. 17 cr. nett, which is half of what the recent biggies have fetched in their opening weekend. If one scrutinizes the business, the big city plexes have performed better, while plexes in towns/smaller centres and also single screens remained poor. A tiny section of multiplex-going audience has liked the film, while the masses have given it a thumbs down. Thanks to the negative word of mouth, the business fell drastically on Monday, even at big city plexes. In fact, the fall in business was massive, which rules out a big, fat figure at the end of Week 1. The distributors, who have acquired the film for steep prices, will stand to lose a substantial chunk of their investment, looking at the initial trends |
